The Top Ecommerce Platforms: BigCommerce vs. Volusion

bigcommerce vs. volusion

When it comes to providing ecommerce stores to our clients, there are two main hosted solutions we use to get our clients selling online: BigCommerce and Volusion. But which one works for the most businesses, and why?

My personal favorite is BigCommerce, but there are the pros and cons for each that will help you decide which one is best for you.

The Pros and Cons of BigCommerce vs. Volusion

There are many pros and cons to each BigCommerce and Volusion, so I've listed here the ones that most frequently affect our clients (important differences are in bold).

BigCommerce

  • Pros:
    • Wide selection of store templates
    • Templates are easier to use, and you can further customize the look and feel of your online store
    • Flexible product options
    • Bulk edit and import of products, including inventory updates
    • Advanced SEO tools
    • Simple, intuitive back-end user interface
    • Flexible discount rules and coupons
    • Vast number of third party apps and integrations available
    • Robust analytics
  • Cons:
    • Single warehouse for shipping products
    • Abandoned shopping cart feature not available in base plan

Volusion

  • Pros
    • Wide selection of templates
    • Deeper, more flexible product options and slightly more inventory control than BigCommerce
    • Bulk edit and import of products, including inventory updates
    • Source products from multiple warehouses and offer flexible shipping based on origin
    • Can edit products through storefront when logged in
    • Advanced SEO tools
    • Abandoned shopping cart feature available in base plan
    • Flexible discount rules and coupons
    • Vast number of third party apps and integrations available
  • Cons
    • Does not allow easy export of open orders for fulfillment companies
    • Template are very difficult to customize and require advanced knowledge

Most ecommerce platforms allow for flexible shipping and tax rules, so I didn't include those items in this comparison. Unless our client needs very complex product options or ships their products from multiple warehouses, we use BigCommerce.

Both of these hosted ecommerce solutions are great products; our preference for BigCommerce is based purely on the complexity of the templating system in Volusion. For most customers, it's a tie, but if you need to customize your store template, you may need to choose BigCommerce. Likewise, if you ship from multiple warehouses, you'll probably need Volusion.

If you're exploring ecommerce as a part of a website redesign, we'd be happy to take a look.

We'll review your current website, and follow up via email to schedule a call with you. Just let us know that ecommerce is a priority, and we'll be prepared to talk about your options.
