Launched back in February, Snapchat’s On-Demand Geofilters are a powerful social media marketing tool that lets you create a custom filter for any occasion.
Previously, Snapchat only allowed businesses to advertise with sponsored geofilters, which weren't affordable for small businesses—the price of a sponsored filter can be as much as $700,000 per day! With on-demand geofilters, you can pay as little as $5.
We recently tried it out and created our own Snapchat geofilter for the Knoxville Hubspot User Group meetup we lead. Here's a step-by-step look at the process I used to create it:
Step 1: Go to Snapchat’s On-Demand Geofilter Page [Click Here]
Click on "Create Now." You will be prompted to log in using your Snapchat account (so, if you don't have Snapchat for your business, Step 1 is technically "Get Snapchat").
Step 2: Download the Templates or Create Online
There are two ways to make your filter; you can either create one online, or use your favorite image editing software with Snapchat's basic templates.
If you’re familiar with Photoshop or Illustrator, just download the templates, create your design, and save it out as a PNG.
If you're not a designer, you're in luck. Last month, Snapchat released an online tool that allows you to customize pre-built filters. Just click the "design" button under create online.
You can still create a great looking design without any knowledge of graphics software. Choose from birthdays, celebrations, or weddings, and customize the text and colors to your liking. You can even upload images to add to your filter.
Step 3. Upload Your Design
Next, upload your PNG to the Snapchat On Demand Geofilter page, where you can preview your design here. This is ours:
Step 4. Choose Your Dates and Location
We chose to use our filter for a day, but you can keep yours up for as long as you want (or are willing to pay for). You can even put it up for just a few hours if you'd like—perfect for events at rented venues.
Just type in your address and map out the fence to get a price estimate. When you're ready, check out using your credit card.
Step 5. Wait for Approval
After you check out, you'll get an email telling you your credit card has been charged. The approval process can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 48 hours; our filter took just over a day to be approved.
Step 6. Use and Promote Your Filter
Snapchat will send you an email when your filter is live. Then it's time to play! Make sure you tell your guests (or whoever you intended the filter for) about it and remind them to share the good times on social media throughout your event.
Here's what our filter looks like in action:
So that's how you make an on-demand geofilter. Pretty easy, huh? From start to finish, the whole process took about 1.5 hours, and it should take even less time if you utilize the new online design tool.
Snapchat lets you see how your filter performed, too. Analytics are available the next day for things like how many uses and views your filter had! That way, you can see how your designs from one event to the next.
