Twitter Reveals What People Give Up for Lent

Do you ever wonder what other people give up for lent?

Now that social media allows us to share almost every element of our daily lives, you don't have to wonder!

Stephen Smith of Christianity Today used Twitter to track what more than 100,000 users are giving up for Lent, and the results are both predictable and hilarious.

Of course, the #1 answer was chocolate. Twitter and school took second and third place, suggesting that Lent may be a rough time for co-eds.

Food

By far, most people chose to give up a food item. Twitter users reported that they were giving up everything from Nutella (#91) to chicken (#99), and four restaurant chains even made the list: Starbucks (#21), McDonald's (#31), Chipotle (#44), and Taco Bell (#69).

Impractical Things

I'm not here to judge, but I don't think these are going to work: food (#25), stuff (#35), sleep (#86), and breathing (#78).

Tech Addictions

Some people are addicted to sweets (#8); others can't put down their phones (#43). Here's the list of technological compulsions that Twitter users will be giving up:

  • Twitter (#2)
  • Social networking (#6)
  • Facebook (#18)
  • Instagram (#24)
  • Netflix (#37)
  • Snapchat (#54)
  • Selfies (#55)
  • Texting (#83) (Good luck!)
  • Tumblr (#100)

That's Just Sad

Some melancholy Twitter users will be attempting to put such things as feelings (#76), hope (#89), and caring (#94) behind them this spring, while others will be giving up you (#19), boys (#33), life (#38), and, confusingly, themselves ("Me" - #60).

Vices and General Bad Behavior

Naturally, alcohol (#4 - also, booze at #80), swearing (#5), and smoking (#29) were popular choices, as were procrastination (#62), complaining (#72), negativity (#75), and laziness (#98).

However, some people were more forthcoming - sex (#17), marijuana (#34), makeup (#64), pancakes (#48), porn (#81), beer (#41) and even One Direction (#93) made the list!

For Smart Alecks

Twitter's sarcastic crowd joined in the fun, tweeting that they were giving up Lent (#13), giving things up (#22), nothing (#61), religion (#30), and Catholicism (#59).

Frustrated students reported that school (#3), homework (#15), college (#28), and studying (#96) among the things they're getting rid of, though I'm guessing they'll abandon that idea when mid-semester exams come around.

Lots of people were still grumpy about the cold weather; winter (#49) and snow (#57) both made the top 100.

Perhaps in reaction to all the healthy folks trying to give up fried foods, hundreds of Twitter users reported that they would forego the gym (#88), exercise (#92), and vegetables (#95) this Lenten season.

But take heed, smart alecks - nearly 200 of your fellow Twitter users reported that they're giving up sarcasm (#73)!

You can read the full list here - it's well worth the time.
